Who we are
At SPCK we take a great pride in the breadth of our resourcing
of the Christian community. In our mission statement we commit ourselves to
- Communicating the Christian faith in its rich diversity
- Helping people to understand it and to develop their personal faith
- Equipping Christians for mission and ministry
Our publishing encompasses books across a broad spectrum of Christian belief,
resourcing people of different traditions and offering the opportunity to
understand other strands of Christian thinking more fully. We are very committed
to reaching those outside the church (as well as those within it), and we are
proud that SPCK has the ability to sell titles strongly beyond the traditional
markets for Christian books. We believe our authors value this commitment to
enriching the dialogue between traditions, and we welcome those who want to be
part of this process.
Our sales expertise into the Christian and general markets is excellent, and our
team of sales reps personally visit all the major outlets in the UK and Ireland
to present our books. You'll regularly find SPCK titles in the bestseller lists
in the Church Times and the Church of England Newspaper. We also promote our
books via consumer mailings and academic conferences.
We set high standards for editing, design and production because we believe
these are essential to reflect the quality of the content and ensure each book
gets its message across. We have a strong team to supervise copy-editing and
proofreading, and our publications look and feel like books to be proud of.
We are committed to high standards of environmental responsibility in our book
production. All the paper we use for printing books in the UK is sourced from
sustainable forests, and all our UK suppliers have an environmental
accreditation. Overall, 80% of the books we produce are printed on FSC* paper,
which puts us among the best in the UK.
We have significant expertise in selling rights to other English language
markets and for translations into many languages (37 at the last count!), and we
resource this with dedicated rights staff, drawing on our relationships with
publishers across the world.
Our association with SPCK Worldwide serves to remind how lucky we are to have so
many books at our fingertips, and we are proud to be involved with the
International Study Guides programme, which supplies books to students in
training for ministry in the Global South. For some of them these will be the
only books they ever possess.
We are a lively, friendly team, with a vast reservoir of experience between us.
We care about every book we publish, and we put energy and passion into
selecting and promoting every title we take on. Our books and our brand are
respected in trade and academic circles, and we demonstrate our commitment to
excellence in theological publishing by running the Michael Ramsey Prize for
Theological Writing on behalf of the Archbishop of Canterbury.
We want to publish the most exciting, attractive, creative and sustaining
Christian books available. We always want to hear from authors who want to be
part of this project. If you're interested in submitting a proposal do please
take a look at our submission guidelines for advice about
what we're looking for and what we'll want to see. And we'll look forward to
hearing from you!
